Question: i live in a thatched cottage which is at least 300yrs old all i know is that henry williamson lived here with his family while he wrote taka the otter and children of shallowford. my house is on the fortescue estate in filliegh owned by lord and lady aron. I am trying to find a little bit of history as i imagine there should be quite alot hope you can help

Answer: Hi there, If your house was once owned by the estate, then you can use surviving records to build a picture of occupancy. However, it's still best to work back in time from modern sources, so that you have a framework of names and dates with which to work; so you should also consider land surveys, electoral lists and census records first before heading back 300 years! Good luck!
