TELL US YOUR HIDDEN HOUSE HISTORY! Tell us the story of your house and be in with a chance to tell us your hidden house history, including the chance for your house to appear on TV!

Tell us your story and you could win a great prize and even have your home featured on The History Channel.

The best three entries will win a fantastic laptop worth 500, a one year subscription to Ancestry.co.uk (worldwide deluxe membership worth 199.95), Digital Domesday a searchable CD ROM version of one of the most important books in the world, fully installed on the laptop and a My House History portfolio which comprises of a personalised and unique dossier tracing the history of your home from as far back as the mid-19th century through the various editions of Ordnance Survey maps.

Three runners up will also each receive a PDA (personal digital assistant) worth up to 250 and a one year subscription to Ancestry.co.uk (deluxe membership to worth 69.95).

We are also planning to make some of the winning entries into short programmes to be aired on The History Channel.

HOW TO ENTER:

Getting involved couldnt be easier. Simply use our online guides to start researching your home and send us up to 250 words about something interesting youve discovered.

You may want to consider one of the following as a basis for your story:

  1. People - lived in your house and what was their story ?
  2. Architecture - have you uncovered any lost or interesting features ?
  3. Community - does your house fit into the history of the local community, or is there an interesting fact about why or where your house was built ?

To enter simply complete the competition entry form, ensuring you include your 250 word story, and an explanation of the evidence you have to support your application e.g. a photograph, map, document, letter, census information. Please do not send any evidence at this stage.

Please ensure you read the below terms and conditions before you enter this competition.
And that you fulfil the criteria for entry (below)

  1. Entrants must be living at the property they are researching, or have a clear link to it (e.g. a parent’s house) with permission from the owners
  2. Public buildings should only be submitted by those with a personal link, i.e. if you work in a building
  3. Entrants must obtain relevant permissions for supporting evidence i.e. photographs or downloaded maps etc.
  4. Please read the terms and conditions. By submitting an entry form entrants are accepting the terms and conditions.

1.The competition is open to residents of the UK & The Republic of Ireland aged 18 and over and excludes employees of The History Channel and Ancestry.co.uk, their families or anyone directly involved with the project. The closing date for entries is midnight on 24th November 2006. 2. These terms and conditions will be deemed to include the instructions set out in the entry form or the online entry form. 3. A completed entry form (in print or online), a summary of your story and details of supporting materials must accompany each entry (the Entry, collectively the Entries) 4. Entrants should not send in original materials when entering; entrants will be contacted by The History Channel to request materials if necessary, in this event only copies of written documentation and materials; transcripts of audio interviews and summaries of film footage will be accepted. 5. Entries cannot be returned. 6. We will not acknowledge receipt of Entries but we will contact those entrants whose Entry we wish to make into a short programme (the Documentary, collectively the Documentaries). 7. Proof of postage will not be accepted as proof of delivery and neither The History Channel nor Ancestry.co.uk can accept responsibility for any items lost or damaged in the post or otherwise. 8. The winning Entries will be those deemed to be the best house history stories by a panel of judges selected by The History Channel. 9. The judges decision is final, and no correspondence or discussion concerning the decision will be entered into. 10. The three top prize winners receive a laptop, a one year subscription to Ancestry.co.uk and a copy of the Digital Domesday. The three runners up will each receive a PDA and pay as you go vouchers to access Ancestry.co.uk. Should the prizes become unavailable due to circumstances beyond The History Channels control, the promoter reserves the right to withdraw any of the prizes at any time 11. The prize is as stated and no cash alternative will be offered. 13. The History Channel may also, at its sole desecration, use Entries submitted to create a short Documentary, further Documentaries and a book, subject to there being a sufficient number of Entries to create such book. 14. In consideration of The History Channel running this competition (the receipt and adequacy of which the entrant hereby acknowledges), by submitting your Entry to The History Channel, all copyright and rights relating to the Entry, to subsequently submitted material, or to the Documentary shall vest in The History Channel, and no reproduction fees or publication fees shall be payable. The History Channel, Ancestry.co.uk and the project partners may at any time use any Entry or Documentary for the purposes of promoting all or any aspects of The History Channel and its services and those of Ancestry.co.uk and other partners. Such promotion may include, without limitation, promotion by means of television, press, exhibitions, books, archives, CD-ROMS, videos, The History Channel and Ancestry.co.uk and other partners, and the Internet. Further, The History Channel may at any time broadcast the Documentary in full or in part by means of any form of media, now known or hereafter developed. 15. The entrant undertakes and warrants that to the extent that an Entry or any subsequently submitted material contains any third party material, the use of such material in the project, and the use of such material by The History Channel for the purposes of creating and exhibiting the Documentary in the manner set out in the previous condition shall have been cleared by the owner of that material. Further, the entrant undertakes and warrants that the entrants own material shall be original and shall not breach the copyright of any person. The entrant agrees to indemnify The History Channel against any loss incurred as a result of such material not having been properly cleared for use in the manner intended. 16. Entrants will be required to make all supporting materials available to The History Channel in order to produce the Documentary which will be transmitted by The History Channel in the Hidden House History slot. The History Channel may, at its sole discretion, schedule further broadcasts at any time in such as it shall decide, and The History Channel reserves the right to schedule exhibitions of the Documentaries by means of book, the Internet or such other media as it shall require. 17. If requested by The History Channel, entrants shall take part in interviews with the media and other marketing activities required to promote Hidden House History project and/or the Documentary and/or the services of The History Channel. 18. The winner will be notified in writing by 22nd December 2006. 19. Details of the winner will be available from the promoters of the project, The History Channel, after 22nd December 2006 by sending a SAE to: Hidden House History, The History Channel, Grant Way, Isleworth, Middlesex, TW7 5QD. 20. Entry into the project constitutes acceptance of the terms and conditions. 21. The History Channel may use the information provided on the entry form to contact the entrant about the services of The History Channel.
