House History Tool – Online Research Guide

3. Google It

Example 3

Once you have compiled a list of landmarks from your local area, a great way to discover relevant local history is to utilise a search engine such as www.google.co.uk or www.msn.co.uk.

Try all combinations of searches and start with as broad a search as possible - for example, “Middlesex history” or “Newcastle local history”. Searching for information on your county and town will help to put the history of your house in context and you’ll be amazed what you discover.

Continue by narrowing your search down - try your street, including any previous road names taken from your old maps, your postcode or even your house address.

HINT: Don’t just use the first two or three of pages from your search result – pages 8, 9 & 10 can be just as useful as pages 1 & 2.
