Many institutions similar to this one existed throughout UK. Most now, like Colney Hatch were closed and are executuive Housing sites.
All were similar with Farms and complete accommodation in form of "small Staff Village" at end of main drive.. In the Colney Hatch programme it mentioned the Male and Female Wings, this segregation of inmateswas the same all over, however what was not mentioned was that the staff were also segregated, and even married couples had to walk seperately to work, the males up one side of the drive and the females up the other side,
apart froim farms and other means of self sufficiency the Hospitals also had their own Fire Brigade and Fire station with engine.
To work in the hospitals prior to the NHS you usually had to be a Sports person, a Musician or entertainer as the hospitals were a self contained community, I trained under several ex Pro footballers who when their playing days came to an end became Mental Nurses..
There is so much informatioin regardinng these places
