Episode 3 – Muswell Hill

Showing Times

In each programme our duo are called in to solve the hidden history of a house, no matter how big or small, old or new.

Dr Nick Barratt is our archive specialist. Dr Jonathan Foyle is our architectural historian and archaeologist.

Jonathan and Nick investigate the hidden past of owners Yimmy and Robert's 1920s suburban semi.

At first glance it looks as though there are no original historical features remaining inside the house, but what can Nick and Jonathan find here?

There are many differences between their house and the others on the street – was it bomb damage or was it eager owners making fashion changes and alterations? And what is the strange concrete feature in the garden; could it be an Anderson Shelter?

Jonathan starts his investigation by looking at the inside for original features – and finds that the 1920's staircase is an original design. Jonathan digs up the back garden and makes a series of amazing finds. He gradually pieces together what does, indeed, seems to be an original Anderson Shelter – with its corrugated roof, front door, and curtain rail for a blackout curtain all in the dig.
